I think McVay is pretty secure. Stan's not going to fire him anytime soon, whether this works or not.
I think he's motivated by a desire to win, not to avoid the axe. Heck, if he was fired he'd have a job again in about 5 seconds!
Yeah, football is a team game for sure.
I just see a lot of posts saying how MUCH better Stafford is than Goff. Light years better. No comparison. No training wheels. No babysitting. No limitations on the offense now. The whole offense is going to be better now, and more PPG and all that.
So it's only logical, I think, at that point, to ask "well how much better will the Rams do then? With a QB that's light years better? How many more wins? How much farther into the playoffs? Given how far they went dragging Goff like an anchor, all the way to the superbowl, shouldn't they win it now?"
And that's when people get all squirrely, and start trying to lower expectations all of a sudden, and saying "weeellll, there's no guarantees, you know." and I laugh. Because there's a big disconnect there between "Stafford is so much better than Goff", and "gee, who knows if they'll actually get any farther".
I'm thinking they just grew to dislike Goff (so did McVay, apparently), so now they want to love Stafford, but they're not really all that secure in their belief that it's going make a big difference.
I know you played QB, and I wonder. Despite some flaws that became obvious with Jared, does Matt Stafford just do everything better? Or are there maybe some things that Goff is better at that don't show up in his stat line.
Goff couldn't elevate the team, it is said. Goff couldn't put a team on his back and carry them. Despite his stats, did Matt Stafford ever take the Lions anywhere? They were not a good franchise or team, most of the time, but the idea was to get a cube that elevates everyone else, I thought. There's no real evidence that happened in Detroit.
Anyway, I know I'm a small minority here, and I haven't belabored the point. This is only my 3rd or 4th post on it since the trade.
I just think it's a point of view to consider along with all the hurrahs.
Ramily!
