There's a lot of guys overpaid in the NFL at all positions, and it's going to look worse with QB since it's the highest paid position. Sometimes you need to overpay in my eyes, because the end result of not doing so could be much worse.

First I'll say that I'm really against overpaying players. But I understand there are some circumstances where it's better to do that. For example, when the Rams were a bad team and not an attractive destination, they had to overpay some just to retain their good players. But now, I wouldn't advocate that approach for them. I said when Donald was holding out, if I'm going to overpay, ideally it should only be for elite players. Now, no one says we're not getting our monies worth with AD.

Same applies to me with the QB position. I'd overpay for Mahomes. I'd give him $50M instead of $40 if it was necessary. But I wouldn't overpay for Tier 2 & 3 guys.

Instead, I would let those guys go after their rookie contracts and join the QB carousel as you put it. In fact, if I had a Goff or Wentz caliber QB, I'd use a 1st or 2nd pick on a QB BEFORE their rookie contract was up. I'd do it some time around year 4.

This all assumes of course that the objective of the team is to win a Super Bowl. Realistically, some teams are not even trying to win; they're primarily trying to make money. They don't tell fans this of course but it's a well known secret amongst league insiders I've heard.

But if a team's true objective is to consistently win, getting handicapped with a Tier 2 or 3 QB that has as large of a salary as the elite Tier 1 QBs is the most risky path possible IMO. Consistently winning requires a Tier 1 QB so you keep searching until you find one. I'd sooner take my chances on the team slipping back down into the cellar because at least that way you get a top 10 draft pick.
