That’s really strange. I’ve heard the phrase used both ways. But I looked it up today and the accepted meaning is as you state.

In the Rams case though, it doesn’t seem like their goal is “good.” They’ve already had good by going to the playoffs 3 times in the last 4 years.
So I would say yes, they have paid a big price trying to replace the good with the perfect – or if not perfect at least better than good. Because their standard is higher than good.

Personally, I don’t think their improvement will be cosmetic because I see Stafford as a tier above Goff. When the trade happened, one of the talking heads did a survey of league scouts and GMs and the general consensus was that Stafford is a bottom Tier 1 QB and Goff was a bottom Tier 2 QB.

I believe what we will see is an offense that is no longer ranked 22nd or whatever we were last season. I expect the points per game to increase from the 24 range back up to the 30 range that it was in 2017/2018. In an ideal world where everything stayed the same that should translate to more wins.

That said, we don’t live in an ideal or a static world so some variables may change. The defense may get worse. But that would have nothing to do with Stafford or Goff. If the offense does increase scoring to 30 ppg but the defense drops from #1 to #8 and the end result is the team is relatively the same, is that a bad reflection on Stafford? I don’t think so.

Ultimately though, my current expectation is a better offense with the defense still being strong. Which should lead to more wins.
