Kurt Warner?
Martz did not berate Warner in public as the starting qb until KW fell apart in 2003--and in 2003 when he had obvious tensions with KW it corresponded with poor play from KW, in which case you have to ask how much of the bad play was Martz being a Richard (so to speak). It certainly didn't help KW any at that point.
In early 99, when KW was the #2 behind Green Martz notoriously laid into him, and later claimed that was to test his mettle and so on. I doubt that. Martz did not want KW as the #2 but Vermeil insisted. I think Martz, who is notoriously abusive, just lit into KW at that point because he did not want him in the #2 spot. But when KW was the starting qb Martz spoke of him publicly with the normal kind of professional respect you generally see from coaches.
Anyway there is a long long list of head coach/qb combos, and rarely if ever do you see the coach berate the player publicly. To this day, Bradshaw complains about how Noll handled the qb situation. And in fact Noll did not start that until he fired the only qb coach Bradshaw had, and took over qb coaching himself. In the end Bradshaw thrived but how much of that was in spite of Noll? To me the story that resonates the most is Starr telling Lombardi to not criticize/berate him in public. Lombardi respected that. I think Lombardi even told the story himself, out of respect to Starr, which is why we know about it.
