You are 100% correct imo. This was not handled the way I expected and it's a scar on McVay's resume. Regardless, I'm happy we have McVay running our organization. I'm sure he would do it differently if he could but it's water under the bridge now.
Doesn't mean I'm right.
Just how I see it....
There are 2 issues here. A short comment on both.
Issue 1. Was McV all in on JG at the time of the extension? My view: I didn't sense impatience with Goff until 2020.
If McV allowed himself to get tied to a contract he wasn't all in on, that's not good IMO. Though I personally think he was all in at that point. I think things changed in 2020.
Issue 2. Did the regime handle the qb situation well at the end of the year? In terms of the bit I red bold, yeah we see that the same way. I agree. And IMO...I agree that it was just something that happened and the coach learned from it. I also believe he would do it differently.
There's another issue--did McV handle the qb situation well
during the season? (This is different from issue 2 though it's related). Other posts address this issue.

I believe he was about 60 - 40 in favor of the extension but not 100%.
Hard to know for sure because we were not involved in the closed door meetings with all the intangibles involved agreeing to the contract extension.
It's only a hunch but I believe the Wentz extension put pressure on the Rams & (McVay) to sign Goff to his. I could be wrong but that is a huge reason from my armchair.
Either way McVay signed off on the extension but I highly doubt he didn't have second guessing thoughts about it.
McVay experienced things revolving around Goff pre-extension that none of us fans could see from our living rooms or reading articles.
There are things we will never know at the moment but I expect they will surface years from now.
