Some people react differently. I am one that thrives off of insults and derision (though I certainly prefer praise) -- others shrink from that type of criticism.
The only way to find out, if nothing else is working - is to try it.
McVay did - it didn't work - maybe even backfired and that was the end.
Of course, I could be wrong and McVay was just pissed at Goff and was venting.
Name a qb who thrived because of public insults and derision. I do know the story where Bart Starr took Lombardi aside and said criticize away, but never in front of the team.
I can name 2 qb coaches who knew Goff shouldn't be handled that way--Greg Olson (2017) and Zac Taylor (2018).
I know that a Rams coach or more likely former Rams coach who said McV knew how to tear down the qb but not build him back up (confidence issue). They didn't say "tried it to see what would work," they said did not know how to.
Also I disagree with the assumption that a frustrated McV was driven to this. He appointed himself the qb coach, which means he ought to know how to fix things without berating the qb. I think it's as likely if not more likely that on his own an impatient McVay screwed with the qb's confidence. In public no less.
We can't say how much of Goff's inconsistency in 2020 was from himself or from McV not knowing how to be a qb coach. I know some people like to get McV off the hook by saying he was just reacting to Goff's inconsistent play. They can never prove that and as I said it is just as likely that McV being impatient screwed things up.
I do know that McV said he had communication issues. Well he was the qb coach. One of his absolute top priorities as a qb coach
is to communicate!
Either way, qb and coach did not mesh. Luckily Stafford was available. In terms of being in communication with the qb, McV is just not going to have those kinds of issues with a veteran like Stafford, who has been there and seen it all and dealt with genuinely bad head coaches like Patricia. (One of the reasons Patricia failed as a head coach, btw, was his penchant for berating players in public.)
I know I have to add things about how McV is a great coach, though with some flaws I assume he will grow out of. I have to add that because if you don't then someone is going to mischaracterize this as an anti-McV rant, and so the point of real conversation is lost.
