...they said, "it's okay to challenge him publicly, so long as you build back his confidence when things cool down. That part never happened."
Which to me means, McVay challenged him, "our QB has got to take better care of the ball" but never followed up on it. When he went error free the next week vs Arizona he didn't need to throw a party or even say anything. But the following week, when the Patriots DB made a phenominal play to take the ball away from Woods, it would have been the optimal opportunity, especially after they won both games.
Something doesn't sound right. There's got to be much more to this story than what we know or have been told. There was a definite and now, obviously permanent disconnect there. It's going to be interesting to see how McVay reacts if Stafford has one of those brain farts.
First, I don;t think it was all about "taking care of the ball." Things got said by McV before that was an issue in 2020. Goff's 2020 multiple turnover games came in spurts and the way I saw it, that was him pressing to make plays when he shouldn't. Instead--run (and slide!), bail on the play, throw it away, take the sack. In fact after the last multiple turnover game (SF) there was 2 TOs for the next 6 games. I seriously doubt any qb would balk at being told to take care of the ball. And in fact, in those last 6 games, he did.
I agree with the red bold bit. I think we only have hints about this story. And if we did hear the whole story, I am far from sure either side would come off well. In terms of Stafford, I doubt McV reacts to him in the same way. My bet is that they will be much more collaborative and that McV will learn things from MS. Not that there won't be criticism--there always is. But I don't think McV will get into the same negative space with how he handles Stafford.
