The bolded part above is key.
It's hard to dispute your point of the rarity of finding a good LOT later than the 1st round in the draft. So that clearly makes trading up an option I'm sure they will consider.
But the other option is making do with a viable LOT starter that's not above-average. As 43 suggested maybe they can go the FA route for a Tier 2 type. Noteboom would likely fit in that category. There are other names for that too.
Point being, I have serious doubts they're going to be able to immediately go from an elite player in Whit to another elite LOT. We should prepare for a player that is a step or two down from what they have now. Just being realistic.
I don't believe in that. Me saying at least more than average was a very deliberate and pointed remark--teams do not do well without an at least solid LOT. I did not say "ABOVE AVERAGE," that's your misconstrual of what I said. I said better than just average starting LOT. You are taking that as "better than average" ie. exceptional which was not my point. I didn't say that. I said just an average player at LOT won't do. That means he can be solid, it does not have to be elite, but you need at least that. A JAG at LOT won't do.
If you doubt that, name the teams that have gotten by with just an average player or JAG at LOT. And I mean as starters across whole seasons (we have seen teams get by in the short run with injury replacements at LOT, like the Eagles in their superbowl win).
So no I don't believe you can get by with just an average player or JAG at LOT.
And in fact, when I did the math on a decades worth of lower round picks, only ONE PLAYER ended up as a starting LOT. It's not a mixed bag of JAGs trying to hold the position along with some solid guys. It was Only. One. Player. At all.
As for saying no one would dispute the point that good LOTs are usually found in the round 1, I wish you would say that to the people who ARE disputing that. I mean read the thread. You agree with me against others. You don't cover that by telling
me no one would dispute a point they
are in fact disputing. Go argue with them.
And I don't know what you mean by "tier 2 type." It's not much of an argument because no one said your LOT has to be elite. He can't be just a JAG though. Tier 2 solid LOTs do work out in the league. It's not a big compromise to start Matt Light as opposed to Orlando Pace. Solid will do. But that's still better than a JAG.
