You can’t pay him whatever he and his agent want if it breaks the bank. By that i mean that the contract will damage the TEAM as a whole. It’s a team sport and one player is not going to make up for lesser players everywhere else. If that’s where they’re headed they will tag him a few and then trade him. I hope a fair contract is reached, he deserves it, but if it’s about ego the Rams have a problem. I’m a Ram fan first and don’t like any moves that damage the team. I’ve seen way too many bad Ram teams to stomach more. As far as fantasy football goes, if that’s the preference then by all means break the bank.
The team can sign a player who is in Donald's range and still maintain a solid core of high contract vets.
Most teams devote 60% of their cap to around 10 players. You can sign Goff and Donald and have room for 7 more key high contract players.
Besides the Rams believe they can sign him. It;'s either that or they're jerking him around in ways we should be ashamed of.
AND ALSO if Donald really were inherently unaffordable, why would a team trade for him? If you were right the Rams would figure it out and other teams would to.
With that in mind imagine the Rams (hypothetically) releasing him and then Donald as a FA saying, I only sign with a team that extends me with a 2nd contract. You honestly believe he would have no takers.
And I never accept the idea, about ANY player, that them taking what the market says they can is a matter of ego. Same things got said about Warner when he was up for an extension in 2000 and the Rams were bad-mouthing him for his "demands."
The vast majority of players get around their market value, that's just the business side of being a player, and the Rams can afford a cap that includes both Donald and Goff. The numbers say that and besides as I said if it WERE true they couldn't afford him then why are they negotiating? Or if it's just a ploy they're being jerks.
