Point taken, dz.
Rams have to extend their stud players, no question.
But they do have a few things going for them, don’t they?
These players will certainly sign with some team, and what better team would they want to sign with, assuming a fair offer?
And with what better coaches?
Rams are a team hungering for playoff success and those upcoming FA players are hungering for a big 2nd contract (especially with a winning team). I see a win-win situation here.
It just makes too much sense for all parties, don’t you think?
I'm optimistic that they can get extensions done too. When I think with my heart, I feel good that will happen.
There are signs that they can and will. The Rams talk as if they know what it's gonna take to extend Cooks and Donald and are prepared to make that happen. And certainly in Cooks case they have to know what his number is because the reason he was available was due to the Pats not wanting to pay that number.
It doesn't make sense to trade for him without knowing that you can meet his number.
OTOH, there are reasons to not be optimistic. I have yet to see the Rams extend an above average player. To date, all they have managed to do is overpay average players.
To say I'm unimpressed so far with their player retention abilities would be an understatement.
And if I'm AD's or Cooks' agent, I recognize the increased leverage with them needing to extend someone and would become a little bit more forceful in my demands. In Cooks case, I'd definitely be leaning towards letting him hit the market. I mean, why not?
So I'm in wait and see mode. Demoff and Pastoors need to show me they have what it takes to get a very good player extended. I'm tired of lip service.
And I lean towards not giving the Rams the benefit of the doubt at this point.
