But doesn't that imply that Young (or Verse) has to drop into coverage? And if so is that the best use of Young's or Verse's skills?
Young and Verse will drop into coverage --- just like Ebukam did in 2020
and just like Keir Thomas and VanValkenburg against the Cowboys
and it was more than once for each
Young, Verse and Hoecht will all have to drop sometimes. There is and was a reason for it last year especially, but often folks don't want to discuss in good faith.
But remember this:
Rams have 3 major fronts they run. A front is the number of men in the box ... that's DL and LBers ... and sometimes a S can jump int
But Rams run:
(1) A 3-4: In this the OLBers do what those diagrams show. Sometines both rush, sometimes both could drop, often one drops and the other rushes
(2) a 5-1 amd this is similar to the 3-4 ... OLBers do the same thing.
(3) a 4-2-5 and THIS is the pass rush front. There are not OLBers, they would be considered defensive ends, but it's the same gus as the OLBers. If someone insisted on calling then OLBers then this could be called a 2-4-5.
In this defense --- the DEs or OLBers do not cover. They rush almost all the time.
Rams are in the 3-4 about 20-25% of the time
Rams are in the 5-1 about the same -- 20-25% of the time
so 40-50/55% Rams in in a scheme that the OLBers drop --- this is the case since 2020. No major changes and will happen this year
Rams are in the 4-2-5 (2-4-5 if you like) and 4-1-6 (2-3-6) if you like around 40-50% of the time and most of those are 3rd downs
or 2nd and longs ... depends on if the offense goes 3-wide or not.
So, half the time, roughly, the OLBers will be in a defense that MIGHT drop a LBer.
And Half the time, the DEs/OLBer (or call them edge players) wll almost never drop.
But Rams draft and sign OLbers who can cover --- they are in the 240-260 range ... they rush and cover. Hoecht is the exception. Lewis was a bust and guys got injured so late in 2022 Hoecht was converted to OLBer. In 2023 he dropped weight and the (usually) coundary CB needed help so he had to cover more than what would be normal. In 2024 he's down to 265 pounds.
But as those still pictures show. the OLBers will cover --- and what most people were upset about
is where Hoecht lined up. 58 times he was the "apex" defender, walked away. Young was 33. Guys like Floyd and Ebukam and Hollins did it about 10-20 times a year.
But with White and Williams outside, there will be less of it ... but it will happen. It happened Sunday
