"The others you mentioned are a year or two away from extensions." That's my point, though.
The going rate for a starting-caliber QB signing his second contract in 2023 will probably be around $37.355M a year. (That's 15.5% of the projected cap of $241M). Meanwhile, Goff's cap hit in 2023 will be $32.45M. If he's still with the Rams he might be the 15th highest paid QB in 2023.
As a point of reference, the 10th thru 15th highest paid QBs this year were:
10. Matt Ryan
11. Ryan Tannehill
12. Jacoby Brissett
13. Jimmy Garropollo
14. Matt Stafford
15. Derek Carr
I mean, if that's the company Goff is keeping in 2 years as the 15th highest paid QB in the league I don't think his cap numbers would be a big deal any more. This year is the big hit, which I think the Rams did on purpose just so his pay wouldn't screw things up in 2022 and beyond.
I get what you're saying but another perspective is that on that list of names 10-15, their teams aren't sold on moving forward with them. There are questions and/or rumblings on nearly every one of them of the possibility of making a change.
So my larger point is, it's really hard to be a strong playoff contender every year if your QB has an expensive 2nd contract and their performance is in the average 15-20 range for QBs. The value is just not there. Maybe the Rams are doing what they're doing because they hold this view.
