Wow I hate to put 2 disagreements in the same subthread but here goes. Armey was not a good GM without Vermeil. Vermeil was in charge, Armey worked with him, and when DV was the guy in charge their drafts were productive. Without DV Armey went south. In fact after 2001 Martz and JZ froze him out of decisions (not that they were any better).
I agree with you about how Snead runs personnel. It's collaborative. Snead is not a boss in charge GM type. That's not his role.
Yes the combination of Vermeil and Armey, however, Martz did not work with Armey like Vermeil. Vermeil leaned on Armey quite heavely, but as so astutely communicated, Zygmunt and Martz froze Armey, which was a mistake. It was Armey that recommended signing Kurt Warner and keeping him over Will Furrer and it was Armey that liked London Fletcher because of those two reasons, he was good in my book.
I have competely different stories. Armey gives himself credit for a lot of things that were not really him. Everyone else, including Martz, credits Vermeil with retaining Warner. For years every time he would speak in public Armey would credit himself with things that we know from the record were not him. It used to be a running joke in online discussions. Warner was Vermeil's guy all the way and Martz tells stories that back that. As do others.
There were drafts where Armey had a lot of say like 2000, and he was a mess. Without Vermeil he struck out more than hit. After that yes Martz and JZ froze him out...till they unfroze him again in 2005 and he continued to screw things up. So you can credit Armey with picks like Jacoby Shepherd, John St. Clair, and Alex Barron.
The 97 through 99 drafts were Vermeil with Armey helping him. Vermeil had been following college coaching as a broadcaster and had been involved in drafts in Phil when he was the HC there. DV was highly involved and knew what he was doing. Armey without Vermeil, not so much.
