dzrams, I am not too sure about the "alienate the player" part. They double tagged Trujo.
There are valid reasons to assume that Donald would be alientated by being tagged, and to assume that the team would look at it as a top player and leader being denied a fair deal. In fact I think it's pretty likely that's what would happen. That's because the tag for a DT is significantly less than Donald would get for a fair contract or a contract on the open market. That was not the case with Tru.
Remember, all these posters who are recommending that the Rams do that, are recommending it precisely BECAUSE they think it's cheaper. That's WHY they are for it. The franchise tag in 2018 for a DT is 14 M. [
profootballtalk.nbcsports.com] The way contracts are going Donald this year probably should get anywhere from 21 to 24 M.
Compare that to Tru. He signed for about 15 M. Well the tag for a CB is around 15 M.
In contrast Donald is a generational talent and there is no DT out there who is his equivalent. The last elite DT in the NFL was Sapp. So the average amount on the tag at DT is dramatically lower than what Donald is actually worth in terms of 2018 player 2nd contract numbers.
And a reminder. Donald is not the only player who has opted to re-negotiate after his 3rd year. It has been several--all guys who are considered the best or one of the best at their position. Like Frederick in Dallas, or Kuechly in Carolina. In each case the team extended the guy. They did not tag him. They negotiated it and settled it, most times before the season started (though I don't remember the details in every instance exactly).
