I just think the Rams are gonna play it that way....rightly or wrongly.
AD will be what, 28-29yrs old by then?? We could still get a 1st rounder + for him then. imo

Again, he's the best DT I've seen in my lifetime - not doubting that for me - I just think the Rams brass will control him thru 5th yr option
and a Tag or even two...then, deal him to the highest bidder.

AD has to play this season to get his 4 accrued years to be eligible for free agency next year.

But if they franchised him multiple times after that and he decided to hold out how do you think the Rams would respond?

Going the franchise tagging route would likely save the Rams money but doing so would also alienate the player.

You also have to consider those consequences and AD holding out is part of that.

BTW, the CBA provides that they can actually tag him up to 3 seasons.

Yeah I look at it this way. The Rams believe they can sign him and afford him, and they're trying to do it. And I don;t believe the Rams intend to use those tags. I think they realize it would have the effect you say it would. Actually I have been saying that for weeks now. I don;t believe the Rams would dither around with the conscious intention of setting him up to be tagged later on.

So it;s like this. Logically there's 2 scenarios but one is plausible (to me anyway) and the other is implausible. Either (the plausible take) the Rams are negotiating in good faith which has to mean they think they can afford him, or (the implausible take) they're just stringing him along which means they are bargaining in bad faith.

The way I am saying that is this. It's like saying, either Joe ate the leftover pizza or bears broke in without leaving a trace and ate it themselves (said in a place where there are no bears). When you say something like that, you're saying Joe ate the pizza.

Short version? The Rams believe they can sign him. Which has to mean they believe they can afford him.

That doesn't guarantee they will sign him, cause who knows. But they are making a sincere effort and I just plain don't believe their intention is to string him along and walk him into tag years with no contract.
