A typical radical cystectomy surgery is 5-6 hours. If there are no complications, you'll be in the hospital 5-7 days. You'll be really sore after the surgery but walk, walk, walk every chance you get while you're in the hospital, even while hooked up to an IV. Walking will wake up your bowels. You can't eat or leave the hospital till you TOOT so walking is important. My surgery was on a Thursday morning. I farted on Sunday and got breakfast on Monday. If you decide on an ileal conduit, I have LOTS of info I could share with you if you're interested. Just PM me. Also... you may want to take a look at the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network website at [www.inspire.com]. It has tons of info and lots of online participation from folks with bladder cancer, caregivers, and medical professionals. It's a great place to go when you have questions. It was extremely helpful to me! People who have had this procedure still hike, bike, swim, have sex, go to work, and live pretty normal lives. They just do it without a bladder. No one knows I have a bag unless I tell them and I don't care if they know anyhow. I'm not embarrassed about it. I'm friggin' grateful that my cancerous bladder is gone and 6 years later, I'm still here! Besides, now I can pee standing up which is pretty cool. LOL
Be a good patient and do what the doctors tell you to do, don't hesitate to ask questions and keep asking till you get answers you understand... and just keep living. It's all worth it.
