I do think there's a chance Goff performs much better without McVay pressure. Maybe his confidence comes back.
But make no mistake about it, all three have to succeed. If Goff doesn't succeed, he may be replaced in the draft next year. His career and longevity in the league is at stake. Think Bradford...
I'm going to have to wait to see some kind of evidence of players being hamstrung by fear of McVay. Some on this board have tried to paint him as immature, a tyrant and even a questionable playcaller. None of which seems to be based on facts or anything tangible.
With Goff, all we know that is factual is that he struggled under Fisher and eventually struggled under McVay. At the very least, it's looking like he needs a very specific set of circumstances to play well.
I believe anyone who tries to paint McVay as a tyrant or a questionable playcaller is engaging in supreme hyperbole. I don't think they could be any more wrong. That said there have been maturity issues. IMO, those were and are to be expected given he's still the youngest coach in the league.
As for evidence of immaturity, we already have some. He admitted a problem with real-time communication with Goff. Who knows what that means. Everyone can speculate but any communication problem could be a sign of immaturity. There have been reports that he tore down Goff without adequately building him back up and he seems to have an impatient/impulsive streak. All three of these things are signs of immaturity IMO.
So McVay is not without blame in the breakdown of the relationship.
However, Goff is by far the biggest culprit in that breakdown to my eye. I do agree that it seems he needs a specific set of circumstances to play well. I no longer see him as a good QB now or in the future. I question him on everything above the shoulders. The in-game processing and reading of defenses and weakness under pressure are well known. And now, with him falling apart and losing confidence under McVay's demanding standards, I question his mental and emotional toughness.
Elite arm, subpar head. That's my verdict.
