I don't think McVay is completely changing his offense SoCal. This article certainly doesn't say he will be doing that. In fact, it can be inferred from several tidbits that it's still his offense.
First, McVay talks about a collaboration. That word alone implies he's learning some things from Stafford and Stafford is learning some things from him. Next, notice McVay's phrasing: "So you’re going to see SOME stuff that reflected in a lot of the success that he’s had in Detroit...." That tells me that McVay is going to implement things into his offense that Stafford has been good at.
Later the article refers to it being "McVay's offense" and notes that Stafford has to learn it. Don't worry! We're not turning into the Los Angeles Lions.
He changed it from 2019 to 2020, and that's without a training camp.
I agree that the system and basic tendencies will remain the same--and that it will recognizably be McVay. BUT IMO there is zero chance McV will NOT learn from Stafford, and therefore add a lot of things and change a lot of things.
Stafford knows more about quarterbacking in the NFL than McVay does. Stafford's first year as a qb in the NFL, McVay was the WR coach for the Florida Tuskers.
Either way you don't just tell a 13 year vet qb what he's supposed to do and leave it at that. You find out what HE likes and does not like and sees and does not see. There is going to be some serious adapting and it will go both ways.
And it;s not just stuff MCVAY thinks Stafford is good at. He will directly ask, what do you like, what don't you like. Again, this will not be dictating. It is much more collaborative, as it should be.
