or positive cable needs to go the red positive on the battery, the black, or negative side only needs to be grounded, which can be to the alternator or most other metal parts..

So, your light didn't go out? Hmm.. either it needs to be reset or - hopefully - the alternator isn't charging the battery, even tho the battery was bad..
