A year ago Christmas eve my work truck was stolen while I was napping in my office about 200 feet away.
There was a crew pruning in one of my orchards nearby, so when I heard a couple of vehicles whiz by about 12:15 I thought a couple of them took off early for the holiday. Went back to napping and woke up a short time later to get my mail. Went to the barn and thought I'd lost my mind because I couldn't find my pickup. Then it clicked in with me that it was stolen (the keys were in it just like they have been for 30 years).
I immediately thought someone working in the orchard had stolen it. I was wrong. Apparently a theft crew was working the area and grabbed it.
Fast forward about two weeks they found my pickup abandoned in a citrus grove about 30 miles away. Met up with a sheriff's deputy at the wrecking yard where the truck was stored and discovered the truck had an additional 3,000 miles on it. Apparently it was involved in a crime spree which involved hauling stolen ag equipment from our part of the state to Mexico. The mastermind (if you call him that) was arrested and eventually convicted of the theft.
The truck was dented, scratched and stunk of weed. Luckily the damages were enough that it was totaled. It ended up costing me more for a new truck, but I didn't want any part of the old one.
