I agree that Wolf may be a better short term solution as a game manager under the current system. However, if Stafford goes down for an extended period of time I don't think we can win crap with Wolf. With Perkins McVay can modify the offense somewhat and utilize Perkins ability to run and throw to put pressure on defenses.

My question still stands: What have we ever seen from Wolf that makes you believe the Rams can win with him at QB if God forbid something happens to Stafford? I have an easier time projecting Perkins as a winning QB than I do Wolf. I would agree if I had to have one of the come in a finish off a game Wolf would probably be the safer choice. Over 5 games it would be Perkins and IMO it's not even close.

Well, first let me stipulate that neither Wolford nor Perkins are anywhere close to Stafford level. Few QB’s are.

And that Rams are in deep doo-doo if Stafford is out for extended time.

However…

If Wolford is playing behind our STARTING OL and if McVay customizes his game plan a little bit, I really think Wolford could execute the fundamental McVay game plan. Perkins cannot. He just can’t because his is such a different style. Now, he might be able to be effective just enough with a major overhaul of the game plan by McVay. But that’s a more drastic adjustment for the other 10 players on O at a time when they least need drastic changes.

Nope. Wolford is the better choice for backup in THIS system.

The only time I can remember Wolf starting with the first unit was late in the season in Goff's last year against I believe it was Seattle and he did not perform well. In fact he scrambled with his head down and was injured. That very limited data set is the only real data available for how he would perform with the first team offense. Now I don't see him in practice and last year he was hurt and did not play in the preseason so we actually have very limited exposure to him outside of practice. He did face a killer pass rush the other day and did throw some nice balls. My point is that so far he has not really shown us much except for 3 years ago in preseason where he was okay. Perkins has gotten a lot more opportunities, partially because he was available, and has performed quite well and you can see him continue to improve and you can see that he has some unique skills as a runner and he is hard to take down. Perkins has at least demonstrated in preseason games that he has command of the offense and can lead it.

If you are right and Wolf is better it sure would be good to see him demonstrate that in preseason. He needs real game experience regardless of the competition. He missed all of last year's preseason games and he doesn't have much experience. I hope you are right and he goes out and lights things up but to this point he hasn't really shown much to deserve him being considered a quality backup QB.
