One more thought. Some here are criticizing Wolf for not showing off despite his extensive knowledge of the system. McVay doesn't expose his best plays in preseason. He runs basic high school plays and lets his assistants call the game. There is no motion. The OL don't pull or trap block. There is no triple stacked wide. No reverse or fakes. No pitches or sweeps. No WR screens. No double moves. Basic, basic, basic.
So Wolf might indeed better execute these plays than Perkins but doesn't get to run them.
In practice they run all these plays with elite playmakers. I actually really like Perkins. He is athletic. He is improved. And he is entertaining.
McVay has more football knowledge in his pinky than I will ever have in my whole body and if he prefers Wolf as his #2, Who am I to doubt his decision? For those who would prefer Perkins at #2 and Wolf #3 or cut I have one more plus for you. Could it be that Wolf is better at practice, but is not a gamer and Perkins sucks in practice, but rises in "real" games? The adage usually is you practice reflects your play. Maybe this doesn't apply?
It's possible. I truly think most of it is the difference in the levels of an opponent's starting D against our 2s and 3s. Give almost any QB time and he'll chew you up. Give him no time and he will blow chunks. It's why AD is the best D player in the league. He instantly goes through the line straight at the QB where the QB is in evading mode instead of attacking downfield mode. How do you think this Mills kid would look if AD, Big AR, GG, Floyd and Lewis we're teeing off against their backup OL?
It wouldn't be pretty.
