Steven Jackson, 2011. First play of the year injured his quad. He'd miss game 2 and then deal with it the remainder of the season. You can say "that's an injury" but how does that happen in week 1? It's a non contact injury. The more wear and tear on your body (read: the further you go into your NFL career), the more susceptible you become to injury, especially at the RB position. And that isn't even considering contact injuries. Jackson's problems started earlier than 2011 (but that was the only time something happened in game 1). He tore his groin in year 4, right thigh issues in year 5, lower back issue in year 6 and finally his quad in year 8. All seemed to be non-contact injuries...or......wear and tear over a long career of football.

Gurley's is an injury also. It's a surgically repaired knee (perhaps the beginning of his 'wear and tear') which will flare up from time to time and at the very least have to be managed as they have said time and time again. Some believe the Rams are 'hiding something'. That's great for speculation but in the end, it may just be that old knee acting up. If he injures nothing else, that knee will eventually cause his retirement.The theory you can't suffer 'wear and tear' in week one is nonsense. He's been suffering wear and tear since he tore his ACL in 2014. Just like SJ was suffering wear and tear in year 4, 5, 6 and 8 (and further) of his career.
