and agree...there's a different change towards long term contracts for certain players - which I do NOT bemoan their right to make as much as possible...but teams have a right to do the converse too. I think when a guy gets tagged, for the most part, he wants a SUPER contract and has every right to get what the market will pay him...I'm just saying i think teams are developing a counter strategy whereby they will 5th year and then tag a player to control him as long as possible...and then tag and trade him to a team that is willing to break the bank for that player.
Not only does the original team get the "use" of the player for a few years...but his big contract depends on him playing well, so odds are he will give that season his all. However, that player will want a super-contract and that's when it's time to control his future as much as possible and then deal him....I don't think the Rams will pay AD actually and will use te tag to control him for 2-3yrs and then deal him for 2 No1 draft picks. In 2-3yrs AD will be older and the Rams will have gotten the best of him all the while AD will get paid very well with a few Tag years of salary. Or they may trade him after just 1 or 2 yrs of Tagging him...if the trade value is super!
I'm just speculatin...but that's how I think it will go down in 2019-2020. We'll do the same with Peters if he plays well but we'll have to stagger it since there's only 1 tag. The only guy I see getting that super contract is the QB Goff.
