McVay's rather harsh methods as the qb coach from 2019 on contributed to the problems. He himself said he was not communicating well. Insiders said he knew how to tear the qb down (in front of the team) and not how to build his confidence back up.

Those are among the things a qb coach is supposed to do--communicate and help maintain the qb's confidence. When Goff had 2 great qb coaches (Olsen in 2017, Taylor in 2018) he did better than he did in 2020, when the abrasive and impatient McV was his acting qb coach.

An insider has said that the 2 qb coaches in 17 and 18 acted as a buffer between McV and JG. From what we saw--that worked.

And of course even if your narrative were true, there is still no excuse for a coach being abusive with his qb in front of the team. Unless you can think of an example where that worked. If there are any they are rare exceptions. I just take it that at times, and in some areas, McV is still not fully matured as a coach.

Fortunately for us none of this will happen with Stafford, who knows more about quarterbacking in the NFL than McVay does. McVay will listen to Stafford. Even though in his 5th year Stafford had as many poor games as Goff did in his 5th year. 2013 was not the ceiling for Stafford--we'll see if 2020 was the ceiling for Goff.
