Which is exactly where I think McVay had pegged Goff at.
McVay's rather harsh methods as the qb coach from 2019 on contributed to the problems. He himself said he was not communicating well. Insiders said he knew how to tear the qb down (in front of the team) and not how to build his confidence back up.
Those are among the things a qb coach is supposed to do--communicate and help maintain the qb's confidence. When Goff had 2 great qb coaches (Olsen in 2017, Taylor in 2018) he did better than he did in 2020, when the abrasive and impatient McV was his acting qb coach.
An insider has said that the 2 qb coaches in 17 and 18 acted as a buffer between McV and JG. From what we saw--that worked.
And of course even if your narrative were true,
there is still no excuse for a coach being abusive with his qb in front of the team. Unless you can think of an example where that worked. If there are any they are rare exceptions. I just take it that at times, and in some areas, McV is still not fully matured as a coach.
Fortunately for us none of this will happen with Stafford, who knows more about quarterbacking in the NFL than McVay does. McVay will listen to Stafford. Even though in his 5th year Stafford had as many poor games as Goff did in
his 5th year. 2013 was not the ceiling for Stafford--we'll see if 2020 was the ceiling for Goff.

I reject your description of McVay as related to Goff in ‘19- ‘20. ‘Harsh methods’ doesn’t fit the overall McVay style with all other players and coaches that I’ve seen described since ‘17.
Just the opposite, actually.
McVay seems to have been loved and respected by players both present and past. Coaches, too. Even coaches replaced have nothing but kind words that I’ve seen for the man.
And yet you are throwing around words like ‘impatient and abrasive’, ‘abusive’, ‘tearing down QB in front of team’, ‘tear down Goff’s confidence and not build him back up’, etc. It’s almost like calling McVay some kind of madman.
I call BS and personal pet agenda.
Look, nobody’s claiming that McVay is perfect, but Goff DOES have to accept responsibility for his declining results since mid-2018, don’t you think? It’s the freaking NFL, man. The ultimate meritocracy and there’s no room for delicate snowflakes in that locker room or practice field. A $100M QB has to put up or shut up.
IMO, McVay did his level best to elevate Goff from mid-2018 through 2020 and finally came to the conclusion that Goff just wasn’t good enough. That’s approx 42 games which is more than a fair test.
The results of McVays management and coaching on the other 52 players and all the many asst coaches (including the many assistants leaving through promotions) speak for themselves. A very impressive and enviable track record, indeed.
So, to me it seems unreasonable to claim that McVay just ruined Goff (and no other) while simultaneously stringing together 4 consecutive winning seasons and countless player/team/coaching successes. It defies both logic and my sense of fairness toward Goff.
And that’s all I have to say about that.
