The 70's Rams were great but they lacked that star QB. Perfect historical example of why McVay made a move. All of us can argue whether the Rams handled it well, but the bottom line was that McVay thought Goff wasn't going to bring to the table what was needed to get his team to the Super Bowl.

I wish the 70's Rams could have done the same.

Enh. He was impatient with a 5th year qb. Shrug.

The 70s Rams would have been great if they had even the 5th year Goff.

5th year Stafford was not that much better (he had just as many bad games as 5th year Goff) and that's in spite of Stafford's excellent physical gifts.

Maybe I misunderstood what you were saying in this exchange above. NMR said that the bottom line is McVay thought Goff wasn't going to bring enough to the table to get back to the SB. Your response was that McVay was impatient with Goff as a 5th year QB and that even 5th year Stafford wouldn't have been any better.

I take from that response that McVay was impatient with the typical and expected development of a 5th year QB. I.e. Given the emphasis on the 5th years, it appears to me from this exchange that his impatience concerns the QB's level of development rather than the manner in which he handled the QB.

Yeah you took me wrong.

2 points, which are separate and distinct.

First, I didn't say Stafford would not have been any better. I said that he too had poor games in his 5th year. See to me that does not make either qb bad, it makes them inconsistent. I see hyperbole regularly on this topic, where some seem to think the bad games define the player. Well no--this was not a Wentz-style complete collapse, yet some talk that way. If we're not factoring the full range of stuff, good and bad, then, to me it's not a discussion of reality.

Second, no my remarks about his impatience have exclusively to do with how McVay as the qb coach handled the qb during the season and then up until the trade, after the season. I don't like the way he acted as a qb coach. It was part of the problem--screw with a qb's confidence and you end up with a qb who at least part of the time is not playing with confidence. And I am not one of those who will make excuses for the coach by asserting that Goff deserved it and was the cause of it all. Naw--what's on McVay in that is on McVay.

So anyway I never make the argument that trading Goff is an act of impatience.
