yeah they are both good
when those offenses are rolling its a thing of beauty... McVay is evolving ... I think he's going to get more diverse in terms of his formations... I do think that's one edge that Shanny has over him
re Goff and Jimmy G - eh maybe... I mean I just think its marginal the differences between them and when I say that I mean how they perform and lead their teams
Think we see it similarly with the coaches. I believe McVay is going to be a Belichick-type head coach in terms of his upside because he has that drive to master all phases but I'm not sure Shanny shares that.
Can't disagree with lumping G&G together. To date they've been similar in that each came up short in the Super Bowl.
But that said if you look deeper at the QBs...
* Goff does have more arm talent. He's a top pick based on that arm talent. That doesn't really mean a whole lot, granted, in a WCO historically speaking (where accuracy is king), however McVay has a love of taking deep shots which makes Goff a perfect fit for his offense.
* In the Super Bowl the 9ers moved the ball on the ground but Garoppolo still played terribly. Directly comparing the situations the Rams' offense was smothered by the Patriots' defensive backfield, Belichick did a number on McVay strategically in both the run and pass, and Goff took a lot of the flak but I don't think the Rams' loss was as much his fault as the 9ers' loss was on Garoppolo. Splitting hairs maybe but I am a Rams fan.
* Garoppolo has shown a tendency to throw INTs regardless of protections and regardless of whether the run game is working. Goff has a tendency to press and throw INTs when his protections aren't there (i.e. he's not arrived yet as a QB ) but when he's got protections and a run game he tends to rip defenses.
I mean this stuff is all opinion based and we'll never know... But I get the feeling that had the 9ers started Goff in that Super Bowl they would have won the game. Garoppolo is holding them back IMO and will continue to do so. But Goff isn't going to hold you back when the run game is there and defenses aren't fully anticipating route combos.
