Goff has not been good under pressure as the Rams QB. It was true in 2016, 2017, 2018 and again in 2019
Now the truth is the Rams oline regressed baldly last year but to imply that his issues dealing with pressure are purely due to last years oline simply isn’t true.
This is a direct quote from the article and it addresses 2018. At the time of its writing the 2019 season had not occurred yet
Goff’s difficulties dealing with pressure that night were a shining example of a weakness he displayed all season. When pressured, Goff completed 68 of 157 passes (43.3 percent) for 913 yards (5.8 per attempt), five touchdowns and five interceptions. Goff’s passer rating under pressure of 59.8 ranked 29th of the 39 quarterbacks with at least 150 total dropbacks last season.
And as you are well aware there is more data out there dzram already posted it in great detail and this is not the first time you and I have discussed it either
I’m just glad Goff is working on those things they talk about in the Athletic article. Its exactly the areas he needs improvement as I have been saying for the last two years. If Goff works on making THE RIGHT decisions and quicker (not just throwing the ball away), making better throws when off balance, making better throws when on the move and being more consistent when disrupted, JUST AS HE HIMSELF SAYS HES WORKING ON.... then his ability to have impacts on close games like the game in Chicago in 2018, the SB in 2018, the 49ers game in LA, and the Steelers game last year for example (just to name a few off the top of my head) he can help the Rams win even if the online struggles and the Rams don’t have a run game.
I never bought your data or DZ's. I think both of you were making mountains out of molehills. For one thing there are a limited number of plays in 2017 and the first half of 2018 where the qb was under pressure and as he often just threw it away in those games, which is something your sources don't account for. Oh and I read the article where he is working on things and you don't characterize it accurately.
Either way 2019 is a completely different matter. The OL was unsettled in different ways all year (I say different ways because it was 2 different OLs.)
(2016 had OL issues too and run game issues)
Given the circumstances in 2019, a 13th or 14th ranking for 2019 is good, considering.
And I never said that a regressing OL results solely in pressure issues, in fact it is always add a lot more than that. I've said all this so many times over the years (yes years) it is almost boring to have to type it up. again. I don't think you ever account for these things but they are real. When an OL is struggling EVERYTHING that happens on offense is related to that, whether it looks like it on a given play or not. It affects the play calling, the qb's confidence, overall execution, timing, everything. A problem OL, whether caused by injuries or regression or all of the above, throws off the qb's confidence, timing, rhythm, and also directly affects the playcalling. It leads to the qb pressing just to make plays. (This is a big Goff issue but he never takes his eyes off downfield and is always standing in to make a play--which means under bad circumstances, he's pressing.)
Being 13th or 14th under pressure in 2019 shows how well Goff played under the circumstances in 2019. That's also without a running game in a playaction offense. All that had on offense was the pass. Yet they were 11th in scoring. All the issues I list were there last year and it was visible.
And don't pretend anyone said Goff doesn't have areas where he can improve, he does. And also please avoid the "he needs things to be perfect" mantra that some fall back on in these discussions--no, he just needs a solid OL and a decent running game (as opposed to a bad version of either).
