I guess because they want to see the team play at full strength. And, there is a sense of jealousy...the player is getting paid millions so "that is enough...they don't need more."
However, this flies in the face of so many things.
- Actors get $30 million a movie and no one says a word. Why can't they take $5 million? How unfair!
- Silicon Valley makes billions and no one is out there criticizing Apple, Google, or others for the prices they charge. Don't they make enough already?
- Warren Buffet has billions? Why does he need that money? He gives to charity but why can't he give people a million here or there?
When a player is the best in the world at what he does, he has a right to negotiate. Aaron Donald is not doing anything illegal. He is exercising his right.
I read words like..."He should be grateful." "$21 million is enough." "His agent is giving him bad advice." "Aaron Donald is selfish." Those comments make it all about the fans.
Well, if you have a winning lottery ticket, go ahead and give it to someone to hold for you for a year, become incapacitated, and see how fast their memory fades as to where they got the ticket. The point is...you cash the ticket now because in one year who knows what can happen. And, if something happens, you nor your family benefits.
Aaron Donald is a lottery ticket. If Aaron Donald goes out and plays for $6 million and has a career ending injury or doesn't maximize is earnings opportunity, no one here will be affected. No one here will remember in a year or two. The Rams will drop him like a hot potato and keep the ticket (money).
Aaron Donald bears virtually ALL the risk here. I used to think the same way as many here...pro management. But, as I've seen the owners make billions, with players not benefiting $1 from franchise valuations, I have moved to the players side.
Plus, Aaron Donald playing this year would be just stupid. I understand you may not like it but you certainly have to agree it would not be wise to risk injury and not benefit. Oh...but $21 million is enough...in your opinion. Donald can sit out a year, and easily make up the difference with a new team and new contract.
So, for those of you who don't think Aaron Donald has a say, don't think he has leverage...

AD’s agent is not just giving him bad advice, he’s giving him terrible advice.
AD needn’t play for only his $6 million this year. He’s been reportedly offered something in the neighborhood of $21 million plus for 5 years with $70-80 million guaranteed. BIG difference. All he has to do is say yes and the celebrations all around begin. He could join the Cooks/Gurley Party.
It’s a mis-characterization to say “$21 million is enough”. But I do think that it is fair, or at least a next door neighbor.
I do think that you made a lot of other good points, though.
