let the market decide and let another try their best offer...
Why shouldn't both sides test FA by letting AD's agents negotiate with other teams??
Rams CAN match if they choose to.

Non-exclusive franchise tag:
This is the most commonly used tag. When most people refer to the "franchise tag" it's generally the non-exclusive version to which they are discussing. It is a one-year tender offer to a player for an amount no less than the average of the top five salaries at the player's position over the last five years, or 120 percent of the player's previous salary, whichever is greater. The player can negotiate with other teams.
The player's current team has the right to match any offer,
or receive two 1st round picks as compensation.

Why don't the rams just do this - after their own maximum/budgeted offer and let him negotiate with another team
and IF the Rams wanna match it...they can. I would think the Rams probably would match it - if just a few million difference!!!!
ie. Browns would sure like to add AD to help in their revamp.
If not, they can trade him, get 2 - 1st rounders and move on...no big whoop.
The Rams may blow the picks or they may not! I'm betting they do pretty good with those picks!
Naw this is a generational player who does absolutely everything right.
Just pay him. Skip all these games. Do things the right way.
They can't tag him this year anyway. They already used the tag and the deadline is past.
I know we are discussing hypotheticals here but within that frame, I don't have much patience for the Rams dithering around with this.
Plus I am not all that inclined to see this EXCLUSIVELY from management's perspective. Donald has a side too. I don't think we are really exploring this issue in the right way unless we find ways to include that.
If I were Donald and the Rams dithered around like that instead of coming up with the 3-4 M they need for a reasonable deal, I would not want to stay with them. I would want to go to a place where they knew how to appreciate a generational player who does everything right. This too is a hypothetical, like yours, but it sounds plausible to me.
If the Rams can't determine what fair market value is for a player like this and need to do tag games to figure it out, then, why are they getting those big salaries?
