I have switched drumstick brands and sizes many times over the years. For most of my career I would have on hand a thinner size, maybe 7A, for lighter work and quickness and a thicker size for the a more powerful strike... 5's, I'm using 5's and 8's right now.
In the beginning I preferred the thinner sticks, but over time I gradually, very gradually, changed to thicker and heavier sticks.... but I have never liked, then or now, the really heavy sticks some drummers use.
Most important for me is the length.. and that's a problem. Anything over the standard length is very hard to find. Vic Firth makes a 17" that I just bought not long ago. Love the length but don't have the feel of some of my other sticks... still, I'll probably end up using them exclusively, at least for a while.
Tips... Nylon or Wood. I like the tone of the woods better but I prefer the bounce I get with nylons. Used to be that wood tips broke more easily but today that doesn't seem to be the case... probably just me not attacking as hard as I used too. But when I buy sticks today I'll get two pair, one with wood tips and one with nylons... same size.
I'm not particular about brand.... I've never noticed much difference in quality, if any... at least from the name brands. Those cheap off name ones are horrible.
Funny thing about weight and drumsticks. Today they are nearly perfectly matched... down to weight differences that shouldn't be noticeable at all... but, and almost every drummer will tell you this, I do feel a difference... it may be very slight but one will feel slightly heavier to me. Mental? Maybe, but blindfolded I can pick the same one out every time. And the heavier stick must go in my left hand.
