I spent time working in both types of "Operator Services"... Long Distance and Directory Assistance. This was back in the day when you HAD to have an operator assist you to make an overseas call, ship-to-shore or an emergency call ( i.e., when people would dial 0 and say "get me the police, or an ambulance, or fire department). This was before 9-1-1.
