The big question: what is 'an above average' LT worth on the open market?
According to spotrac.com, 9 LT's changed team last year [
www.spotrac.com] And only one of them seems prohibitively expensive.
And according to turfshowtimes, 21 LT's are set to be FA's in 2022. [
www.turfshowtimes.com] Now, you know as well as I do that a bunch of those guys are going to re-sign with their team, but it wouldn't surprise me if 10 or 12 of these guys hit the open market.
So what will Boom be worth in 2022 when there are a lot of other LTs also available? He's obviously not in Trent William's class. But is he any better than Villanueva, Fisher, or Reiff? And I ask that in all honesty cuz I really don't know. But for the sake of argument I'll say Boom is in their class so maybe he's worth $10M because he's younger and the cap is going up? And on a multi-year deal his value goes up a bit each year?
So I'm going to lay out one way the Rams could sign Boom to a 4 year, $47M contract with a $10M signing bonus if they also wanted to keep Whit around for 1 more year. If anyone wants to chime in with another figure I'll be happy to do this again. But keep in mind, his cap hit will still be $3M in 2022: I'll just adjust the salaries in the other years.
2022 $1M salary and $2M pro rated signing bonus = $3M cap hit.
2023 $10M salary and $2M pro rated signing bonus = $12M cap hit.
2024 $12M salary and $2M pro rated signing bonus = $14M cap hit.
2025 $14M salary and $2M pro rated signing bonus = $16M cap hit.
2026 ZERO salary, but still a $2M pro rated signing bonus = $2M cap hit. <== void year for cap purposes only
