Coming in to replace Whit for a game or 2 isn't a worry with Boom. The bigger question is can he be CONSISTANTLY good enough for a whole season?
I like Boom but if Whit wants to play and will work with us too...I say keep Whit and throw Boom a bone to wait one more year.
First, as to Boom consistently playing well? What more do you need or expect beyond the fact that he’s already done so every single time he was called upon? I’ve got a helluva lot more confidence in Boom at LOT than some midround rookie or some 2nd tier FA that the Rams might scrounge up after Whit finally does retire.
Second, keeping both Boom and Whit seems impossible given Rams cap situation. Rams will be forced to lose valuable UFA’s even WITHOUT Whit’s cap hit in ‘22. Just not an option, man. We are facing either/or with Whit and Boom.
Third, why would Boom even consider a ‘bone’ thrown for a short term modest salary when he will have many choices and many suitors for at least the average starting LOT rate next year? It would be seen as an insulting offer by Boom and his agent. This is another wishful non-starter suggestion.
Look, I don’t relish losing Whit either. I LOVE the guy. But by a simple process of elimination I don’t see any other alternative.
