Jackie Slater played to 41 but by his age 40 season (1994) he was a shadow of his former self. PFF has Whitworth ranked as the 8th best OT out of 83.
His 2022 cap number of $14.7M is an issue though. Right now it feels like the assumption is the $13M cap savings the Rams would receive if he left is pretty necessary. IF Whitworth did return in 2022 (again, amazing...) that number would have to come down by a decent amount.
If big Whit does indeed want to continue playing, I am sure he would be open to negotiating a new lower number. Just like Jackie Slater, Whit isn't the same guy he was when he was younger either but I still think he will better than anything else we have to replace him.
IMO, he is still doing a fine job. Also just like Jackie, Whit is a "special" player. You want to keep them as long as you can!
#HelmetHornsMatter
“Well, the color is good, I like the metallic blue,” Youngblood recently said while laughing, via NFL Journal. “The horn is terrible. It looks like a ‘C.’ When I first saw it on the logo I honestly thought it was a Charger logo.
“Now when I see it on the helmet, it just isn’t a ram horn. There is no distinct curl like a mature ram horn. I don’t know how the Rams could get that wrong. That is your symbol and it has been for what? Seventy years or more? Longer than I have been alive? It’s just not us, it’s not the Rams.”---Mr. Ram Jack Youngblood
