As I posted elsewhere in this thread, people don't expel individual viruses when they breathe, cough, sing, or whatever. People expel droplets that contain the virus. And while a cloth mask wouldn't stop an individual virus it is certainly effective at trapping those droplets.
As far as peer reviewed studies of masks I did a quick google search and pulled this from the first peer reviewed study that popped up:
"This study suggests that wearing a mask can potentially decrease the viral reproduction number in a general population. Wearing a mask in combination with social distancing and other measures is promising to replace the shelter-in-place orders and significantly reduce the COVID-19 burden on society." [
