Although masking and distancing doesn't "guarantee" you will be safe, I was under the understanding that it does help and gives you better odds against not getting sick. One thing I know for sure is that masking and distancing doesn't increase your chances of getting sick.

Being an older guy, I prefer to error on the side of caution.
