I know there's already been a thread saying the opposite, but I just can't support that view.
The explicit reason given for giving up on Goff was that McVay no longer believed that "the qb" could get them all the way there.
I get that. And he may be right. We'll never know now.
But that sets the standard right there. That absolutely sets what the standard is to play QB for the Rams. If that's the reason you go get the QB that you believe is better and WILL take you all the way there, then it's simply not logical to say that it's ok if they don't make it after all.
I see fans on here posting "woohoo, Stafford baby! We're winning a Superbowl now!!!" and then later saying "The Rams don't have to win the Superbowl, they just need to try." What?
No, to give up on a 5th year quarterback, and give up that much draft capital, and for McVay to be elated that now he has his QB, they have to win it.
Or they failed. It's not gray for me.
I saw the recent article posted detailing the end in Detroit for Stafford and was shocked to read the litany of undisclosed injuries that he played with just this past season. Sure you can say that just proves how tough he is, but it also indicates that he has been knocked around, and accumulated some wear and tear.
Brady, Brees, and Rodgers are playing deep into their NFL twilight, but only Brady seems to actually win the big one lately of those three.
And the fact that those few can go past or near 40 does not mean every QB can.
Stafford will be 33 and has two years left on his contract. At which point they will have to give him big bucks at 35 or cut him loose.
YES, they have to win now with Stafford.
My prediction - First, in Detroit, yeah, it's been bad ownership in the past, but all I'm hearing lately about Sheila Ford Hamp is that she's very caring and respectful to the players and staff. Brad Holmes is a smart guy who is getting his chance now. Maybe we'll find out whether he or Snead is the genius at drafting. Detroit has WAYY more draft capital now and could decide to do for Goff what the Rams would not - acquire the OL talent to make him comfortable in the pocket, get his confidence back, and win with his arm, not his legs.
Meanwhile, in LA, they either do a 180 on their OL philosophy, or they stick with what they've been telling the fans for two years "we're not drafting high round rookies to put in there, we're developing this oline with lower round picks."
Ok, Matt Stafford, welcome to Goff's former world of middle pressure in your face. I predict that injuries will follow, and the Wolford fanboys will get to see how many games he can carry the Rams.
And if the redzone doesn't get fixed it won't matter. That's on McVay.
That's how I see it. Will be interesting to see if the same high standards are applied.
Ramily!
