it doesn't matter if guys like Havs, Everett, Higbee, Kupp are starters or not. It doesn't matter if the Rams have a 60% hit rate on mid rounders where other teams have a 45% hit rate. Its not the mid rounders on a team that determines a team's success. It is mostly the 1st and to a lesser degree the 2nd rd players. Mid rounders mostly just fill out the rosters. Just because a guy is a drafted in the mid rounds and becomes a starter, does not mean we have a successful strategy. We don't have first round talent when you don't have first rd picks. You also don't have the luxury of having 1st rd talent on favorable rookie contracts. This is the story you continue to ignore, and what has created such a bleak future. That and Jared Goff
First round talent is uncovered in the 2nd and later every year. Sometimes even HOF talent if found later. So I couldn't disagree more with your assertion that you can't get first round talent unless you have first round picks.
Doesn't some expert produce a draft redo every year and re-slot the rookies based on their production? I think Kupp was re-slotted in that type of exercise to a top 15 pick. I think Rapp will be too.
Further, it's not the first or second round that determines a team's success, it's who they have as difference makers. IMO, difference makers are what we're looking for. It doesn't matter what round they come out of or even if they were undrafted like Cory Littleton. You can't say with a straight face that Littleton is not first round talent that is a difference maker.
So if the Rams with their 60% hit rate in the mid rounds are finding just as many difference makers as other teams are finding in the first round, then lacking 1sts doesn't hurt them much and they have a competitive advantage.
Where we agree are the issues with three of their designated core players in Goff, Gurley, and Cooks. All three look like potentially bad investments to me. Gurley and Cooks are for sure bad investments that they'll probably be looking to get rid of ASAP. Goff will be a good investment if he has a good OL; if it's not a good one I don't see him as a positive difference maker relative to his salary.
