I may be a bit more results oriented, so I put more weight on records. At best, Rams are 9-7 this year. Will they fare much better next year? The best teams may have a down year and miss the playoffs, but they almost always bounce back the following year.
The Rams will either bounce back and return to the playoffs or they will struggle and have mixed results or worse. Which will it be is the question.
That is the true measure of the quality of the roster, not simply saying they’ve got quality players like Hill, Henderson, Edwards, Evans, and Rapp.
Win at least 10 games next year or the names are irrelevant.
I don't take "I am results oriented" very seriously as an analysis.
Records are not answers, they're things to be explained.
Different teams can be 9-7 for different reasons.
I had the same debate with people before the season who said that Shanahan's record in SF (10-22 at that point) showed exactly who he was. Some of us said naw, he's a top coach who has had bad luck with injuries. If you watched them before this year, you could tell that.
....
What you could tell is that the Niners would have a good record very soon. And they did.
If they continued to struggle that would have raised questions.
I have a particular issue with explaining away mediocre records as not being a true indication of the quality of a team. A team that repeatedly misses the playoffs is not a good team, no matter how you doctor it up.
My point here is that the proof is in the pudding. Make the playoffs in 2020, that’s the pudding. And I’m not explaining this year, I’m looking towards 2020.
