We’ve been told that all QBs drop precipitously in performance when their OLs aren’t doing well. And while that may be true I decided to stop being lazy and lookup how well Goff was doing relative to other QBs when under pressure.
Here is a surprising nugget I found right up front: Tom Brady is not doing very well this year. He’s actually beneath Goff this year in several of the categories I list. That might explain why the Pats office isn’t very good.
Anyway, here are a few categories and how Goff compares in each per PFF’s advanced metrics.
QB Rating When Under Pressure2019 - Goff is ranked 25/30 for QB Rating when under pressure.
2018 - Goff ranked 23/29 for QB Rating when under pressure.
Comp% When Under Pressure2019 - He is ranked 28th out of 30. with a Comp % of 41.7.
2018 - He ranked 27th out of 29 with a Comp % of 42.2.
Adjusted Comp% When Under Pressure (accounts for drops)2019 - He is ranked 28th out of 30 with a Adj Comp % of 57.5.
2018 - He tied for 19th out of 29 with a Adj Comp % of 63.6.
TDs Relative to INTs When Under Pressure2019 - Here are the QBs this year that have more INTs thrown than TDs when under pressure:
Goff, Winston, Rivers, Dalton, Jimmy G, Mason Rudolp, Mayfield, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Terry Bridgewater, and Flacco.
2018 - QBs that had more INTs thrown than TDs when under pressure: Goff, Bortles, Mariota, Flacco, Josh Rosen, Keenum, Cam Newton, Sam Darnold, Derrick Carr, Drew Brees, and Big Ben.
Several items of note.
1) You occasionally get some surprise QBs on the list such as Brees and Roethlisberger last year.
2) Only Goff and Flacco are on the list both years. Flacco just lost his job.
3) The vast majority of the names that are on the list both years are either backups or marginal starters.
Other Miscellaneous MetricsHe’s tied this year with Carson Wentz for 9th on percentage of dropbacks when under pressure. --- This was surprising to me. I thought he would be near 1st.
This year, he’s near the bottom in how many times he’s thrown the ball away, near the top in how many times he’s Hit as Thrown, and he has the 3rd lowest sack percentage at 11.1%. --- This paints a picture as a QB who is standing in there for a long, long time. This could be considered good and bad. Good on toughness points; bad on reading the field and making quick decisions.
Final conclusion: Pretty bad. Maybe all QBs performances do drop when under pressure but they don’t all collapse into the bottom 20% of production. He's really good when kept clean and really bad when under pressure. The Rams MUST have a top performing OL if they want to win with Goff.
