You and I are talking about two distinct things.

You always assume people who express concern about Goff are ONLY basing that on his performance this year. Very bad assumption.

I haven't even engaged in the frame of things dating back to 2007 because it's irrelevant for me since my concerns with Goff predate any injury issues. I've told you specifically several times, with emphasis each time, that my concerns are based on 2018 data points. Last year the OL did not have 'injuries to the point where they can no longer play effectively as a unit.'

And yet...he still was one of the worst ranked QBs in the league under pressure. It's a weak area for him. Period.

I was looking for him to show improvement in that area in 2019. Obviously that hasn't happened and that's where this year's injuries become relevant. But he wasn't good in this category prior to any injuries.

That's a fact. Surely you can stay on point and acknowledge that.

Last year however, the OL was overwhelmed in certain key games. There were problems with Sullivan, Blythe could be targetted, and Hav did not hold up against a strong DL.

Coincidentally, those are also games where Goff's performance suffered.

To me if you just have an OL that does average against a strong front, and Goff would be better. And that's not on the qb.

In 2017 Wilson had one of his worst games ever against a strong Rams pass rush his OL could not contain. It's not like this rare thing.

Agreed that the OL was overwhelmed in certain key games last year. That feeds precisely into my point.

The QB pressures in those games were much higher. Frankly, I don't care if the OL is not performing and allowing pressure because of injuries, player regression, or lack of coherence. Pressure is pressure.

And Goff is horrible under pressure. Not average. Not just a little worse like all QBs. Horrible! That's my point.

You're not making a distinction between worse and worst. All QBs do worse under pressure; Goff is dang near the worst. His performance under pressure is pretty much in line with marginal starters and career backups. This is a fact...to this point.

Because Goff completely collapses under pressure, if the Rams are going to continue to roll with him as their QB, they must maintain a top 5 OL. And this top OL has to be able to stand strong against physical fronts especially because that's mostly what they'll be facing with top teams and in the playoffs.

If they do that, then they have a top performing QB. If they don't, we'll keep getting the bad offense we've seen over the last 19 games.

No pressure is not pressure. And yes it makes a difference.

If an OL is broken or in this case routinely overwhelmed, then several things happen. First it wears the qb down and not just in a game, across games. It changes the dynamic of the offense and what they can call. It sets up an expectation where if the qb is going to do anything he is going to have to press. It erodes confidence and so on.

The reason there is consistent pressure matters. Context always matters.

Your stats would mean something if it were possible to isolate circumstances. So for example, how do qbs do under pressure when game after game the pressure is high and constant and on top of it they are scaling back the offense because there are certain things they know they should not even try.

It is never just the qb.

Using just QB stats doesn't help with that.

...

When you say "in this case" and refer to scaling back the offense you are once again focused on the last handful of games. Again missing the full picture that I've brought up in this thread.

The OL was not broken or scaled back last year and yet he was still nearly the worst in the league under pressure.

At some point you just have to give up trying to explain that away.

I was hoping to see growth this year but it's fair to say that he is still horrible under pressure. There is an imperative to maintain a top OL.
