There is an oft repeated, but erroneous assertion that only Wilson and Brady perform well under pressure.
I once believed this too but since it was never backed up with hard data I decided to research it. I found that it's a myth!
Here are stats comparing QB Rating with no pressure versus with pressure.
First number is QB Rating with No Pressure, the second number is QB Rating Under Pressure. I looked at both the 2018 and 2019 seasons.
Goff - 2019 --- 92.9, 55.8; 2018 --- 112, 54.6
Tom Brady - 2019 --- 103.4, 48.3 (WOW!); 2018 --- 102.1, 71.1
Russel Wilson - 2019 --- 115.8, 105.3; 2018 --- 121.6, 86.2
Deshaun Watson - 2019 --- 109.5, 89.3; 2018 --- 107.5, 86.4
Matt Ryan - 2019 --- 102.5, 72.9; 2018 --- 116.6, 86.8
Kirk Cousins - 2019 --- 126.1, 88.5; 2018 --- 108.5, 83.1
Matthew Staffod - 2019 --- 120.0, 77.2; 2018 --- 96.0, 71.3
Carson Wentz - 2019 --- 96.5, 74.8; 2018 --- 110.5, 76.9
Gardner Minshew (6th round rookie) - 2019 --- 102.1, 73.3
Dak Prescott - 2019 --- 111.8, 73.3; 2018 --- 101.7, 83.5
Drew Brees - 2019 --- 112.7, 76.3; 2018 --- 123.5, 77.0
Case Keenum - 2019 --- 103.6, 73.6; 2018 --- 94.9, 52.2
Marcus Mariota - 2019 --- 97.3, 75.1; 2018 --- 97.5, 76.4
Nick Foles - 2019 --- 98.0, 70.9; 2018 --- 90.0, 86.9
Jameis Winston - 2019 --- 98.0, 42.1; 2018 --- 92.0, 84.9
Phillip Rivers - 2019 --- 101.6, 53.8; 2018 --- 112.2, 80.9
1) As we can see, Wilson has a crazy good rating under pressure this year. But last year it was simply good at 86.3. Based on the 2018 and 2019 seasons, several QBs have been able to post a good rating in the mid 80s while under pressure. Watson, Ryan, Cousins, Prescott, Nick Foles, Winston, and Rivers. All the rest had decent ratings at least in the mid 70s.
2) Almost all of the QBs that retain their job over the long haul all maintain an above 70 QB rating when under pressure. Only a few exceptions.
3) I can’t post all of the data but if you look, QB Ratings when under pressure in the 60’s is a clear line of demarcation between starting QBs and career backups.
4) Goff has probably the largest disparity between his rating under pressure versus no pressure. It’s nearly 40 points this year and was almost 60 last year. Eyeballing the numbers above, most QBs have a disparity of 20 to 30 points.
