He was missing people early.
And we have to remember that offense is a team activity that thrives when guys get in a joint rhythm. WRs can't throw the ball and are responsible to catch it. But, they are affected by the general rhythm. WRs, too, are subtly thrown off by an out-of-synch offense. A good pass from a QB who has been off is just that small bit harder to catch when everyone is feeling pressure to get things moving.
Hey. I'm not blaming everything on Goff. The QB can't catch the ball for the WR. And surely a lack of rapport can't explain Kupp's drop--he and Goff seem to share a football brain. And of course the OL (and the bleeding sad sack Demby) are part of it all, along with a desultory Gurley not scaring defenses.
Nevertheless, Goff simply has not been sharp since that KC game last year. He just is not as accurate as he has been. He's throwing high, leading to balls off fingertips and pick opportunities. And sometimes he's throwing way off target to air. It's a pattern that has lasted long enough to be considered a serious challenge to our aspirations this year. And of all the contributions made at various positions, the QB being accurate with the ball is the most seminal key to offenses that move chains and score points.
