Fisher caused much of Goff’s horrible first half year. That offense was historically pathetic. During his first camp he didn’t get much work with the starters. He was brought in to start mid year only because the season was lost and even a fine QB like Keenum couldn’t make the offense go. To further my point, consider the results of Keenum, Bradford and Foles last year compared to how they did when they played for Fisher and the Rams.
Wentz on the other hand walked into a much better situation to start his career. He had competent coaching and a solid team to begin his career. An actual offense and offensive line. To further demonstrate how much better his situation has been consider that FOLES took over at QB for Philly last year when Wentz was injured. The same Foles who stunk as a Ram stepped in and guided the team to a SUPER BOWL CHAMPIONSHIP.
Wentz is a great QB. He can scramble and run with the best of them, and he has plenty of arm, accuracy and makes good decissions. His running maybe his undoing. I think he could succeed as a pocket passer if he had too. He could have and would have deserved to be drafted number one.
Goff has played terriffic over the last two years, more than adequate to justify his draft position. He has a great arm, very accurate, makes good reads, quick decisions, can buy time in the pocket and doesn’t throw many interceptions. He is described as poised and this year he has clearly stepped up his game again. Good coaching helps, as does a good team to support a young QB.
I’d take either of these QB’s going forward. Goff’s first year the team was so bad that many on this board said, that they would not consider those first seven games as Goff’s rookie season. I can’t go that far. But another season in that system and we may have never seen how good he would be; on the other hand, had he been traded or cut after his first year and found his way as a backup in Philly, things may of worked out for him, they did for Foles.
Even if you do consider Goff’s first year and I do, his career QB rating is better than Wentz’s although comperable. Goff’s career QB rating is 95.6; his rookie year 63.6, year two 105.5 and this year it’s 127.3. He is trending upword nicely. Wentz career rating is 89.1; his rookie year 79.3, year two 101.9 and this year 93.2. Wentz has more tds and more interceptions than Goff, but Goff is tending the right way.
We all want to see Goff bring this team from behind at the end of a game to win; but he and the Rams are playing so well that those opportunities might not occur many times this year. Let’s hope that trend continues. Doubters of Goff based on his first season have not been paying attention to the last two, Goff has flurished under McVay, ADVANTAGE RAMS!
