I don't think it was a freak injury. Actually, I believe Wentz said that he suffered the injury earlier. That double hit by the Ram's defenders exacerbated it. It's not a freak injury if you keep on running. It's then just a question of time. Other than scoring a TD, is there anything sweeter to a D-man than to kill the QB? It feels great to devastating tackle on the QB. QBs who run like Wentz have a limited shelf life.
