I find it comical how people lock in on preconceived views. There is hardly anyone out there in the media who would say Goff is as good as Wentz. Yet, they are unable to reasonably explain the upward trend of Goff's numbers outside of laying it on the whiteboard of McVay. Since the beginning of 2017 to the present, Wentz has a cumulative YPA of 7.38, while Goff's is 8.53. And Wentz's completion percentage is 61.3%, while Goff's is 64.3%. Wentz is a fine QB, but he has his shortcomings. Pederson hides them well, while playing up to Wentz strengths. Clearly, McVay does the same with Goff. But while Goff is downgraded for what McVay does, Wentz gets a pass.
I watched Wentz yesterday. He is a fine QB, a real gamer. He makes some strong throws, but he is limited in the throws he can make based on his mechanics and his footwork. Pederson avoid putting Wentz in positions where he has difficulty and plays to his strength, making a lot of flat footed accurate throws under 30 yards. Goff doesn't have that limitation. But Goff is not able to make plays with his feet like Wentz can. Still, is that a preferred strength that you want long term in your QB? Wentz is taking a lot of hits with his style of play, I'll pass on that strength in my QB and take the guy who can make ALL the throws.
Although the injury issue with Wentz is real, I'm just going to talk about him as healthy.
I am fine if Wentz does well too and even gets more attention. He and Goff are just 2 very different qbs.
I keep saying it but Goff's game is much more subtle and that doesn't always translate to Big Media attention.
Goff is more of a violinist/surgeon (to mix metaphors) while Wentz is more of a lead guitarist/fighter pilot.
