"Third, I doubt the offer was anywhere close to $20M. When teams offer early extensions, they're not giving gigantic raises over the amount they could control the player than if the player played out their contract plus the franchise years. Gurley is a perfect example. The Rams could have controlled him for the next 4 years - '18 - '19 contract plus 2 franchise tag years - at an average of $10.18M per year. ($4.398285M '18 salary, $9.63M '19, $11.866M '20 tag, $14.833M '21 tag) "
Hmmm......so then why would Donald expect anything close to $23M per year or more at this point????
Like you pointed out, you want to get paid early and get your g-money, you usually give up something in doing so.
You kinda reiterated what some of us have been trying to point out. Donald isn't exactly an unrestricted free agent.
I understand very well what some of you have been trying to point out. That would be management's position.
AD's position is: I'm a once in a lifetime, generational player,
I'm the league's best defender,
I'm the league's best pass rusher which btw is the highest premium skillet other than QB...
Metrics show that interior pass rushing is the #1 biggest impact on a defense preventing points scored...
Coincidentally, when I missed the first few games in 2017, the D started off #27 in points allowed and steadily climbed to top 10 once I came back...
The franchise tag for DT's is very low relative to my market value (BTW, this disparity in tag amount and market value is very rare)...
So it would be unfair to use that number as a baseline to start negotiations...
I don't care about your 15% increase over that baseline number...
You're gonna have to break the mold and pay me, or things could get ugly...
I'm not playing another down without a new deal...
And you've got designs on hoisting a SB trophy, if you think that's happening without me, you're out of your g%$D#$n mind! Period.
That's his case.
And you know what? While I understand what you've been pointing out, my stance has always been that his side is ultimately going to win.
He'll get $23M or very close to it.
