If you know anything about psychology, and I'm sure you do, pride is tightly linked to ego.
Again I reiterate, I'd pay him anything he wants that doesn't then screw up other contracts, I believe he's not just the best player in the league, but probably easily so.
Having said that, the way the game is structured means he can never have the week in week out impact of a very good QB.
If he left and we replaced him with a bottom 35% DT it would be an issue, but not insurmountable with our Dline.
OTOH if Goff went and we replaced him with a bottom 35% QB, we're utterly screwed.
Saying someone does something out of pride implies things like integrity and and stalwartness. Either way no I dont' see an ego asking for huge amount, more than anyone etc...that's just not what's happening. He is asking for a reasonable increase given his value as a player.
And no one has the week in week out impact of a good qb, yet the money being talked about with Donald is not qb money. In 2018 the money for qb 2nd contracts (and that's the standard for other 2nd contracts) is 28 M. He's not asking for 28 M. He will probably get 23-24 M, and that stopped being qb money after 2015.
There is room for a highly productive elite DT even if he's not a qb. PLUS the cap implications have been endlessly discussed, and yes you can pay Donald, pay Goff, and a core of others, and be healthy under the cap. It's juist not an issue. The principle is you build around your core elite players especially the one s with character, and Donald is one of those.
Either way the math is simple. Donald is not asking for a HUGE amount given the parameters of paying a "top defender" in 2018. He is asking for a reasonable amount GIVEN those parameters.
There is no particularly good reason for short-changing him. Especially since, chances are, you risk losing him if you do.
